<abstract>
Myth in modern Arabic poetry is not merely a narrative or intertextual reference; rather, through the linguistic organization of the text, it becomes a mechanism for representing individual and collective experiences. Despite numerous studies on the symbolic and mythic functions in modern Arabic poetry, as well as Jungian readings of mythological figures, the formation of Icarus as a poetic figure through the linguistic mechanisms of Jabra Ibrahim Jabra’s poetry has received limited independent attention. The central question of this study is how Jabra, through lexical networks, semantic oppositions, syntactic structures, and patterns of repetition, transforms Icarus from the errant adolescent of the classical narrative into a self-aware, resistant, and responsible subject in modern poetry. The originality of this study lies in combining a Jungian archetypal reading with a structural-semantic analysis of poetic language, while simultaneously examining Icarus’s individuation process across five dimensions: actional, spatial, corporeal, existential, and social. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, the study demonstrates that the repetition of the phrase “you emerged from the cellars” and the prominence of motion verbs construct ascent as a voluntary act and as the beginning of the “call to adventure.” The collocation of the words “leap” and “rebelliously” further elevates bodily movement into an act of resistance. The opposition between “labyrinth” and “sea,” together with the negation of chains, guns, prisons, and gallows, represents a transition from confinement and repression to relative openness at the level of lexical fields. Moreover, the images of “soft limbs” and “wounds” materialize the archetype of the wounded hero, while propositions denying immortality transform death from a physical defeat into a “symbolic death” and a stage of consciousness within the process of individuation. The study concludes that Icarus’s death in Jabra’s poetry does not mark the end of the hero’s journey; rather, through a shift from the individual to the collective pronoun and the expansion of the acoustic field of “cry,” it culminates in his symbolic return as a collective consciousness and voice. Thus, the language of Jabra’s poetry transforms the myth of Icarus from a fixed narrative into a dynamic model for representing modern humanity.
