Abstract: (385 Views)
This research studied the translation of colloquial expressions in two translations of "Diaries of a Wimpy Kid" (Kinney, 2007) based on Newmark's (1988) strategies. According to McCrimmon's model (1963), 100 colloquial expressions were randomly selected from the original book. Then, the researchers tried to determine which of Newmark's (1988) strategies Shadnazar (1400) and Bafande (1390) used to render colloquial phrases and with what frequency. The most frequently used strategy in Bafande’s was cultural equivalent (26%) and in Shadnazar’s, couplet (24%). Another preference of the translators was literal translation (16% in Bafande’s and 22% in Shadnazar’s) and couplet (15% in Bafande’s). Moreover, both translators have used expansion and compression – respectively – only once, and neither used translation transfer, naturalization, notes, and labeling. Since both translations were generally accepted in Iran, cultural equivalent and couplet may be suitable strategies for translating colloquial phrases in novels, especially from English to Persian.
